SUNY ESF Defends Women's Soccer Title

ALBANY, N.Y. — Meeting for the third time in as many years in the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Championship title game, top seed SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry completed a perfect league season to capture their second straight league title, defeating No. 2 seed Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at ACPHS Soccer Field.

ESF defeated No. 4 King's, 4-0, in the first semifinal and Albany Pharmacy seized a 7-2 win over No. 3 Pratt Institute—making their first postseason appearance in their first year in the league—to set up a rubber match meeting. ACPHS defeated ESF in a shootout, 5-4, in 2015 before ESF snapped the Panthers' three-year title run with a 2-1 victory last season.

Despite the Mighty Oaks leading 13-1 in shots over the opening 45 minutes, the championship game remained a scoreless deadlock at intermission. Five minutes into the second stanza, the Mighty Oaks broke through on Lauren Archer's 14th goal of the season, which stood up as the game-winner. Archer would feed Shannon Gordnier for an insurance tally seven minutes later and the Oaks continued to control the game finishing with a 25-4 shot advantage en route to their second title after capturing their first regular season title.

For her efforts in the midfield helping to control play, ESF senior Anna Bishop was named Tournament MVP.

Both squads ranked in the top five in the last United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Coaches' Poll, the Panthers and Mighty Oaks await invitations to the USCAA National Championships when the 12-team field is announced on Tuesday. Pool play begins on November 9 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
