Berkeley Posts Shutout To Claim First Women's Tennis Title

FLUSHING, N.Y. — In only their second year in existence, top seeded Berkeley College captured the 2015 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis championship with a 9-0 victory over No. 2 Pratt Institute on Saturday afternoon at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Berkeley earned the regular season title with an unblemished 3-0 record in the regular season and didn’t surrender a match en route to their first title, ending Pratt’s four-year reign atop the conference.

The Knights assembled a dominating performance winning all nine flights by a margin of five games or greater, led by 2015 HVIAC Player of the Year Ceren Aksoy and 2015 HVIAC Co-Rookie of the Year Maria Avila atop the lineup at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, and pairing up at the top doubles position.

Following Avila was Kate Gorshunova at No. 3 singles and Victoria Mikalsen-Sandstad at No. 4 singles, Alessandra Lippolis at No. 5 singles and Susan Wong at No. 6 singles. The four Knights dropped only one game on the afternoon in their singles and doubles matches combined.

In the first championship contested in a team tournament, Berkeley earned their spot in the title game with a 5-0 semifinal victory over No. 4 seed Vaughn College while Pratt dispatched No. 3 seed The College of New Rochelle, 9-0, in the other semifinal.
