Pratt Sweeps Vaughn To Capture Seventh Women's Tennis Title

FLUSHING, N.Y. — In a rematch of last year's title game, regular season champion Pratt Institute captured their third straight title and seventh in the last eight years, winning the 2018 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis championship with a 5-0 victory over No. 2 Vaughn College on Sunday afternoon USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Top-seeded Pratt (12-2) bypassed No. 4 Berkeley in the semifinals, while Vaughn (3-4) defeated No. 3 New Rochelle (1-6), 5-2, in the other semifinal to set up the title rematch.

In the finals, the Cannoneers swept all three pairs matches with the tandems of Amanda Twu/Melanie Kania and Amy Young/Caroline Madden winning at love, 8-0, at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The Warriors managed four games at No. 3 doubles, but Morgan Ferweda/Isabel Campbell prevailed 8-4 for the Cannoneer.

Named Player of the Year at the conclusion of the tournament, Kania was victorious at love at No. 1 singles and Young, named Rookie of the Year, dropped just one game at No. 2 singles to clinch the title with the Cannoneers leading in the remaining four matches.
