Women's Volleyball: Five Towns 3, Culinary 0

DIX HILLS, N.Y. — The Five Towns College women's volleyball team recorded the first win in program history Saturday afternoon. The Sound defeated the Culinary Institute Steels 3-0 (25-19, 25-10, 25-22) in the first HVIAC (Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) match of the season. The team is now 1-4 on the season, and 1-0 in conference play.

The Sound put together a tremendous team effort to total 36 kills, 27 assists, and 15 service aces. The team got off to a hot start with a 9-0 run in the first set, aided by four service aces from Emily Angelastro and three kills from Lanasia Drain. Five Towns was able to carry the momentum through the rest of the set, never losing the lead, and take it 25-19.

Another service run by Angelastro, including five consecutive service aces, put Five Towns on a 10-0 run to overtake Culinary 25-10 in the second set. The Steels battled through the third set, and scored six in a row to take the lead at 18-16. After two attack errors by Culinary and a service ace from Drain, Five Towns regained the lead and never looked back, finishing off the match with a 25-22 win in the third set.

Freshman Lanasia Drain led the team in kills with 17 and a service ace, Anna Matytsina followed close behind with 12 kills and two service aces. Sophomore libero Emily Angelastro carried the team at the service line and totaled 12 service aces, to go along with two kills and four assists. Sophomore setter Jada Roberts-Duncan helped the offensive attack with 23 assists. Chloe Walton contributed five kills in the effort.
