Tournament MVP

Lisa Scheer - St. Joseph's College

What did St. Joseph’s College freshman pitcher/third baseman Lisa Scheer do to earn the Most Valuable Player award during the 2009 HVWAC Softball Championship Tournament? The real question is, what didn’t she do? After going 2 for 3 with two RBI’s and a run scored during a 10-0 win over the College of New Rochelle during the Semifinal round, Scheer, then etched her name in the Lady Bear history books in the Final. Despite her freshman status, Scheer turned in a spectacular performance on the mound during a 2-1 extrainning win over Saint Elizabeth in the Championship. She pitched a complete game without yielding an earned run, allowed three hits, struck out 11, and walked only one. She also singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give SJC its first HVWAC Tournament Championship in three years.

Coach of the Year

Lisa Root •  Saint Elizabeth

Despite an up-and-down campaign for a young CSE team, Head Coach Lisa Root was voted the 2009 HVWAC Softball Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to a 2-1 record in HVWAC play during the regular season, and a trip to the HVWAC Finals, where CSE nearly pulled off the upset over top-seeded St. Joseph’s College, ultimately falling 2-1 in extra innings. A year after leading her team to the HVWAC Tournament Championship, Root’s Eagles enjoyed a terrific 2009 campaign, including several wins over regional powerhouse programs, including a 5-1 record against members of the ultra-competitive CUNY  Conference. Along the way, Root also proved to epitomize class, integrity, and the commitment to sportsmanship renowned in HVWAC competition for all sports.
