St. Joseph's Repeats as Softball Invitational Champions

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.—St. Joseph's College withstood a late rally from Yeshiva University to claim their seventh straight Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Invitational Tournament title on Sunday evening at Flowers Park.

The Lady Bears (22-16) built an early 3-0 lead in the title game and extended their advantage to 7-0 heading into the final frame, before the Maccabees (6-18) scored three runs with a bases-clearing double, but St. Joseph's starter Jamilynn McGowan (Staten Island, N.Y.) shut down the rally, striking out her eighth batter and closing out the title for the Lady Bears with a 7-3 victory.

St. Joseph's knocked 10 hits in the championship led by Tournament MVP Samantha Simon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who went 2-for-2 with a triple, two runs scored and two walks. In the Lady Bears semifinal victory, the sophomore shortstop went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI.

St. Joseph's advanced to the title game with an 11-3 triumph in five innings over Sarah Lawrence (6-26), receiving four perfect innings from starter Theresa Armano (Middle Village, N.Y.). Yeshiva advanced to the title game with an 11-6 victory over New Rochelle (0-24) powered by a 2-for-4 effort with two RBI from Leah Ben-Zvi and seven strikeouts from Erin Potasnick.

Sarah Lawrence defeated New Rochelle, 12-3 in six innings, to take third place. Gryphons pitcher Kamaron McNair struck out seven in a four-hitter, allowing three runs (none earned) and helped herself at the plate with a 4-for-4 game with a home run and a triple, driving in three runs and scoring twice.
