Albany Pharmacy Holds off CNR to Win Women's Basketball Championship

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Led by Rebecca Foote's (Arcade, N.Y./Pioneer) 14-point, 16-rebound double-double, the No. 1 Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences held off a late surge from host No. 2 The College of New Rochelle to capture the 2016 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball championship on Sunday afternoon at the CNR Wellness Center.

Foote was named to the All-Tournament Team and took home Tournament MVP honors helping Albany Pharmacy (19-4, 6-0 HVIAC) complete an unblemished season in conference play and capturing their first league title since 2012 and third overall.

Jasmine Brandon (Jersey City, N.J./Saint Anthony) paced New Rochelle (10-13, 5-1 HVIAC) with a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double in defeat. Brandon, who was named the league's Player of the Year and also earned All-Tournament Team honors, led the Blue Angels into the title game with a herculean 45-point, 17-rebound effort in a double-overtime victory over No. 3 Davis in the second semifinal.

After two semifinal games that saw the Panthers and Blue Angels average nearly 80 points in victory, the championship was a low-scoring affair with Albany Pharmacy holding a 17-13 lead at the halftime break.

Both teams started to find a rhythm in the second half and the Panthers slowly extended their lead to double-digits just before the final period and held a 10-point lead with just under four minutes to play before the Blue Angels scored eight unanswered to trim the deficit to three with 18 seconds remaining. But the Panthers would maintain their separation from the line, going 5-of-6, including 4-of-4 from Allie Mitchell (Melrose, N.Y./Tamarac), to seal the championship.

With the victory, the Panthers earn the league's automatic bid to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships, held from March 1-5 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. Ranked No. 4 in the last Coaches' Poll, the Panthers will await their tournament seeding when the eight-team field is announced on Wednesday, February 24h at 11 a.m.
