MILTON, N.Y. – Led by overall individual champion Michael Perrson, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry placed eight harriers in the top 10 to capture the 2016 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Championship held on Sunday afternoon at the Hudson Valley Sportsdome.
The Mighty Oaks win the team title for the second time in as many years in the league. SUNY ESF also had nine runners finish in the top 15, collecting medalist honors.
Perrson improved on his third-place time from last year by nearly 50 seconds, covering the 8K course in 28:12, the fastest time on the track in the three years the championship has been contested at the Sportsdome. The senior, who was also named 2016 Runner of the Year, led the field of 56 runners across eight teams.
Following Perrson for SUNY ESF were juniors Dana Carris (28:36, 3rd) and Ryan Shaw (29:01, 5th) and sophomores Nickolas Girodano (29:20, 6th) and Ethan Appelgren (29:23, 7th) rounding out the scoring five, with just 1:12 separating the Mighty Oaks first and fifth harrier.
Vaughn College sophomore Tevin Johnson (28:34) and Berkeley College freshman Anthony Argueta (28:56) cracked the ESF stronghold of the top 10 in second and fourth place, respectively. Argueta as was later named Rookie of the Year in post-race ceremonies.
Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences claimed runner-up honors for the fourth straight year, edging out Pratt Institute in third place by a point. Berkeley College and Vaughn College finished tied in points, but Berkeley took fourth place via tiebreaker. Davis College and Culinary Institute of America rounded out the field of scoring teams in sixth and seventh place.
