Softball: St. Joseph's def. Sarah Lawrence, 9-0 and 12-0

BELLEROSE, N.Y. – Powered by a pair of one-hit shutouts by Jackie Perillo (Howard Beach, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and Jamilynn McGowan (Staten Island, N.Y./Michael J. Petrides), the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) softball team swept Sarah Lawrence College, 9-0 and 12-0, in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Padavan-Preller Field.

The Lady Bears (13-15, 2-0 HVIAC) remain in undefeated in HVIAC play and are winners of four straight while the Gryphons (0-22, 0-2 HVIAC) still seek their first win of the season.

In the opener, St. Joseph's took a 4-0 lead pushing across three runs in the third before a big five-run fourth inning highlighted by back-to-back two-run doubles from Maria Randazzo (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) and Briana Robles (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney).

Freshmen Samantha Simon (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) and Samantha Rossi(Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louis) both contributed a pair of runs and scored twice, Simon also collecting a double and a RBI.

Perillo leveled her record at 7-7 with her first career one-hitter, striking out four and walking one over the five-inning affair.

In the nightcap, the Lady Bears scored three early runs in the first inning off RBIs from Randazzo, Cassandra Molinari (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) and Kristin Ferrigno(Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney). St. Joseph's sent 12 batters to the plate in an eight-run second frame with Christina Quintana (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) and Simon delivering two-RBI singles in the inning.

Eleven different Lady Bears combined to knock 15 hits in game two with Simon, Randazzo, and Molinari knocking two hits each and driving in two runs.

McGowan also recorded her first career one-hitter in the circle striking out two and walking one to improve to 6-8.

In ceremonies following the doubleheader, the team honored their two seniors, Quintana and Megan Moran (Syosset, N.Y./St. Dominic's), as part of their annual Senior Day celebration.

  • The Lady Bears have won 39 straight Hudson Valley regular season and tournament contests, their last loss coming in 2008 to the College of St. Elizabeth (now in the North Eastern Athletic Conference).

QUEENS, N.Y.—In the team's penultimate regular-season doubleheader, Sarah Lawrence College softball was bettered by St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, 9-0 and 12-0, in Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at Padavan-Preller Field on Sunday.

Sarah Lawrence (0-22, 0-2 HVIAC) was held to just one hit in game one. In the top of the second inning, sophomore Lauren Gray (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Waldorf School of Garden City) led off with an infield single.
The Gryphons held St. Joseph's (13-15, 2-0 HVIAC) to one run on two hits through two innings. In the third, rookie Lara Tshering (Thimphu, Bhutan/The Regent's School Pattaya (Thailand)) reached first base on a walk but was unable to advance any further.

SJC furthered the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the third inning and five more in the fourth.

The Green and White added one more base runner when junior Hayley Adams (Dover, N.H./Berwick Academy) reached on an error, but the Lady Bears closed out the game without allowing a Gryphon to reach as far as second base.

In game two, Gray again recorded the Gryphons' only hit, this time in the first inning. St. Joseph's scored three in the bottom of the frame, and after dismissing SLC in order, added eight in the bottom of the second.

Senior Mackenzie Gassett (Camden, Maine/Camden Hills Regional) walked in the third, and the SLC defense kept St. Joseph's off the scoreboard in the inning. The Lady Bears scored their final run in the fourth inning and knocked off seven straight batters to clinch the 12-0 shutout.

Sophomore Rebecca Kuntz (Northridge, Calif./Chaminade College Preparatory) tossed her 10th complete game of the season, notching one strikeout. Rookie Rebecca Somogyi (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishiop John Carroll) totaled three innings and one strikeout from the circle.

Sarah Lawrence concludes the regular season with a visit to HVIAC rival College of New Rochelle. The Gryphons will face the Blue Angels at Flowers Part on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
