NEW YORK – SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry senior Ethan Appelgren (Maplewood, N.J.) was named the 2018 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Runner of the Year, leading 14 men named to the 2018 All-HVIAC Men's Cross Country Team.
Appelgren led the Mighty Oaks to their fourth straight title taking top individual honors at the HVIAC Championship. He posted strong times at the SUNY Geneseo and Houghton Invitationals leading ESF to a fourth-place finish at Houghton.
Berkeley College freshman Julio Sanchez was selected as Rookie of the Year. Sanchez was a one-time Rookie of the Week and highlighted his season with a season-best 8K time of 31:28 at the NJIT Highlander Challenge.
Guiding SUNY ESF to their fourth straight title, Head Coach Mike Melfi and Assistant Coaches Todd Halbig and Hannah Anthes received Coaching Staff of the Year honors.
The HVIAC Runner of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year are selected by the men's cross country coaches in the conference prior to the HVIAC Championships based on performance during the regular season.
