NEW YORK, N.Y. – Powered by an efficient attack that hit .405 with 41 kills in the championship game, Yeshiva University defeated Sarah Lawrence College in straight sets (25-14, 25-14, 25-15) to claim the 2013 Hudson Valley Men’s Athletic Conference (HVMAC) Men’s Volleyball Championship on Thursday evening at the Max Stern Athletic Center.
The Maccabees (13-18), the regular season champions and top seed in the tournament, never trailed by more than two points during their title run, seizing their second league championship and first since 2010.
Yeshiva was led by senior middle Daniel Lapson who earned Tournament MVP honors hitting .581 (29-4-43) over the tournament and slammed an error-free 16 kills (16-0-23, .696) in the championship.
Yeshiva earned their spot in the championship with a straight-set victory over No. 4 Webb (25-10, 25-14, 25-14) while No. 3 Sarah Lawrence outlasted No. 2 St. Joseph’s in their semifinal match, 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 30-28, 25-23). The Gryphons fought off five-set points in the third set to avoid falling behind 2-1 and rallied again in the fourth set to punch a ticket to their first championship game.
St. Joseph’s College head coach Kristin Wulff was selected as 2013 Coach of the Year after guiding the Bears to the most wins and highest finish in school history.
