Women's Swimming: Sarah Lawrence 52, St. Joseph's 41

BROOKLYN, N.Y.—In the team's final Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual meet, Sarah Lawrence College women's swimming defeated St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, 52-41, at Brooklyn Technical High School on Friday.
 
The win is the Gryphons' 10th-straight dual victory in HVIAC/HVWAC competition.  After a five-season unbeaten streak, SLC will transition as a member of the Skyline Conference in 2014-15.
 
Sarah Lawrence (7-1, 2-0 HVIAC) concludes the dual season with the team's best winning percentage (.875) on record and with the most wins since going 8-2 in 2010-11.
 
The Gryphons posted the fastest time in 10 events on the day. Sophomore Sam Amberchan (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) and rookies Jacqueline Quirk (Millburn, N.J./Millburn)Colette Harley (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and Gabby Risica(Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett) began the day with an 11-second victory in the 200 yard medley relay (2:09.38).
 
In the 1000 yard freestyle, junior Alexis Bates (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) and first-year Cici Nicholson took first (12:38.74) and second (15:07.45) place, respectively.
 
Swimming the 200 yard freestyle, sophomore Monika Mednick (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) touched the wall first (2:32.79), while senior Jaime Chu (Hong Kong/Monte Vista) won the sprint for second with a finish of 2:40.24, just 0.06 second ahead of her Lady Bear opponent.
 
Risica notched her second win in the 50 free (28.06). Amberchan (2:41.01) paced the field in the 200 yard individual medley, while junior Natasha Leonard (Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i/Kealakehe) followed in second place (2:50.71).
 
The 100 yard butterfly saw Harley win by a 21-second margin with a time of 1:07.34. Risica followed with a win in her third race, the 100 yard freestyle, in a time of 1:02.67.
 
For St. Joseph's Brooklyn (2-6), sophomore Morgan Summers picked up the Lady Bears' only win, posting the fastest time in the 100 yard backstroke.
 
Bates (6:08.96) and Harley (6:09.37) put up the fastest two times in the day's second distance event, the 500 yard freestyle. The day's last individual event saw Quirk record the fastest performance (1:20.91) in the 100 yard breaststroke.
 
Bates, Leonard, Mednick and senior Dzana Ashworth (Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) rounded out the meet with a swim of 2:01.76 in the 200 yard free relay.
 
The Sarah Lawrence women return to action for the 2014 HVIAC Championships, Sunday, Jan. 26, hosted by College of New Rochelle. After winning 10 of 11 events in 2013, SLC seeks its fifth consecutive conference title. The meet kicks off at 10 a.m.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – After returning to the pool after nearly a month-long break, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's swimming team came up short in their 2013-14 home finale at Brooklyn Technical H.S. dropping a 52-41 decision to Sarah Lawrence College in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual meet on Friday evening.

The Gryphons (7-1, 2-0 HVIAC) won their 10th straight league dual in spoiling the Lady Bears (2-6, 0-1 HVIAC) senior night honoring Haley Betancourt (New York, N.Y./St. Vincent Ferrer), Jaclyn Kennedy (Breezy Point, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) and LauraLynne Duffy (Cutchogue, N.Y./Bishop McGann-Mercy).

Sophomore Morgan Summers (Bellerose, N.Y./St. Mary's) came away with the lone victory for St. Joseph's with a six second triumph in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking in a 1:09.34.

Freshman Victoria Benalcazar (Astoria, N.Y./St. John's Prep) shaved four seconds off her 50-yard freestyle time (31.12) to capture second place and sophomore Jillian O'Hara (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) also took second in the other sprint freestyle, with a 1:06.90 time in the 100-yard free. Junior Jaclyn Montana (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bay Ridge Prep) rounded out the second place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly (1:28.38).

The Lady Bears wrap up the regular season at HVIAC foe The College of New Rochelle on Wednesday, January 22nd also swimming against Post University in a double dual meet starting at 8 p.m.
