Pratt Institute Wins Fourth Straight Women's Tennis Title

FLUSHING, N.Y.—On a beautiful, sunny and warm fall day, regular season champion Pratt Institute successfully captured their fourth straight Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) championship on Saturday afternoon at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The Cannoneers dominated play throughout the tournament sweeping all six singles flights and all three doubles flights for a perfect 27 points, the first time in their four-year reign to accomplish the feat.

Pratt was led by sophomore Agata Jakubowska (Dallas, Texas) who captured the overall singles title for the second straight year and was named the HVIAC Player of the Year – this being the first season the award is being presented by the conference.  Jakubowska later teamed up with No. 3 singles champion Sarah Conant (Lowell, Mass.) to claim the title at No. 1 doubles.

Freshman Megan Balsaldua (Whitestone, N.Y.) was named the inaugural HVIAC Rookie of the Year and captured the No. 5 singles title.

No. 2 singles champion Carson Stanch (Frieldswood, Texas) and No. 4 singles champion Gabriella Guerra (Littleton, Colo.) teamed up to win the No. 2 doubles championship and both seniors have been members of all four championship teams.

Sophomore Lujia Zhu (Shanghai, China) took home the No. 6 singles title while the duo of Stefani Reynolds (Cicero, N.Y.) and Emily Funk (Lake Ariel, Pa.) teamed up for the No. 3 doubles title to round out the flight winners for the Cannoneers.

Leading the Cannoneers to a 7-2 mark this season and unblemished league record, Shawn Cummings was named HVIAC Coach of the Year.

Finishing as runner up in eight of nine flights, St. Joseph's College took home runner-up honors, their highest team finish. Rounding out the five-team field was The College of New Rochelle, Berkeley College and Vaughn College.
