Women's Tennis: St. Joseph’s 9, Vaughn 0

FLUSHING, N.Y.—In their Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) opener, the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's tennis team swept Vaughn College, 9-0, on Sunday afternoon at the USTA National Tennis Center.

The Lady Bears (1-5, 1-0 HVIAC) dominated at each flight to earn their first win of the season, posting shutout victories in three matches and holding the Warriors (0-2, 0-1, HVIAC) to just one game in three other matches.

St. Joseph's took a 3-0 lead after doubles with Samantha Rossi (Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louis) and Mary Edward (Glendale, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) cruising to an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles and Madeline Moravek (Whitestone, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) and Deirdre Lavelle(Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) posting an 8-0 shutout at No. 3 doubles.

The duo of Tathiana Pierre (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Ford) and Victoria LoBosco (Glendale, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) were challenged at No. 1 doubles in the most contested match of the afternoon, but held on to win 8-6.

In singles, Pierre captured her second straight victory at No. 1 singles, besting Maia Rivers 10-1, while Rossi and Lobosco posted shutout wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively – Rossi's first singles win of the season.

Edward grinded out a 10-6 win over Francheska Rodriguez at No. 4 singles, the closest of the singles matches and Moravek improved to 2-0 at No. 5 singles with a dominating 10-1 triumph over Alexus Butler. Shannon Fahy (Breezy Point, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) bumped her record to 2-0 at No. 6 singles winning 10-4 over Talia Tilman.

St. Joseph's improves to 6-0 all-time against Vaughn, all 9-0 sweeps.

The Lady Bears continue HVIAC play on Friday, October 10 with a road match against The College of New Rochelle at 4 p.m.
