BROOKLYN -- Reigning champion Pratt Institute opened Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with an 8-1 win over visiting College of New Rochelle Sunday afternoon.
Sude Rencber teamed with Yeh-Eun Heo for a No. 2 doubles win over Marie and Samantha Gomez, and Nicole Hetzel and Cailyn Culp knocked off Shanique Roye and Iyseoqie Aghahowa.
"Sude and Joan teamed up to control their opponents with deep shots from the baseline and chip shots up close," said first-year head coach Karen Jernigan. "Cailyn and Cole took the net handily with clean volley winners."
HVIAC Rookie of the Week Melanie Kania led the Cannoneers with an 8-0 second singles win over Samantha Gomez. Rencber earned an 8-5 win over Roye in No. 3 singles, and Hetzel followed with an 8-2 victory over Marie Gomez in fourth singles.
