The Berkeley College of New York women's basketball stayed perfect in Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition, defeating the Maccabees of Yeshiva University by a score of 55-37 Tuesday evening at the Wellness Center on the campus of the College of New Rochelle. With the victory, the Knights improved to 13-4 on the 2013-2014 campaign, including 5-0 in HVIAC play, while the Maccabees dipped to 5-8 on the year, and 0-3 in conference action.
Berkeley trailed in the game in the early stages, but took the lead for good when junior guard Janay Thomas converted on a layup to give the Knights a 9-8 advantage with just over 14 minutes remaining in the first stanza. The Knights gradually built their lead from there, eventually taking a 33-14 edge into the locker room at halftime. In the second session, Berkeley opened up the period on 14-0 run (a spurt that was highlighted by freshman center Rondesha Diamond's five points) to take a 47-14 lead with 11:29 left on the clock. Yeshiva did follow that with a 14-2 run of their own over the ensuing 5:26 to pull to within 21 (49-28), but the Knights never wilted, eventually hanging on for an 18-point win.
Thomas led the way for the Knights in their victory, as she posted team-highs in points with 20 (on 10-of-23 shooting) and steals with seven. She also grabbed nine rebounds as well. Junior forward Milan Germany posted another double-double as she scored 14 points to go along with her 11 rebounds. She also dished four assists, blocked three shots, and tallied two steals. Diamond added seven points and 11 rebounds.
The Knights held an edge in most categories, as Berkeley out-rebounded Yeshiva 58-52, while also tallying 18 assists to the Maccabees' 11. Berkeley also dished 12 assists compared to Yeshiva's nine, and the Knights committed three fewer turnovers, as they had 25 miscues, while the Maccabees had 28. Berkeley also shot 32.8 percent from the floor for the evening (21-64) compared to just 21.6 percent for Yeshiva (16-74).
Despite the loss for Yeshiva University, the Maccabees were paced by junior guard Stephanie Greenberg, as she posted team-highs in points with 17 and steals with five. She also snatched seven rebounds, as well. Senior forward Rebecca Yoshor recorded a double-double in a losing effort, netting 12 points and snatching 13 rebounds (including seven on the offensive glass).
The Knights will now have five days off before returning to action on Sunday afternoon, as the Berkeley will play host to the Apprentice School at the Wellness Center on the campus of the College of New Rochelle. It will also be Senior Day for the women's basketball team, with guard Aiyesha Brown set to be honored prior to the game. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 4:00pm.

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.— The Yeshiva women's basketball team was defeated by Berkeley College (NY) 55-37 in a Hudson Valley Athletic Conference (HVIAC) game Tuesday evening at the College of New Rochelle's Wellness Center.
The Maccabees were led by Stephanie Greenberg with 17 points, seven rebounds and five steals, while Rebecca Yoshor had 12 points and 13 rebounds. Berkeley was led by Janay Thomas with 20 points, nine rebounds and seven steals, while Milan Germany had 14 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Berkeley led 33-14 at halftime, and opened the second half on a 14-0 run to take a 47-14 lead with 11:29 to go.
The Knights held a 32-14 advantage on points in the paint and 24-10 on points off turnovers.
Yeshiva returns to action on Wednesday for a home contest against the City College of New York at 8:30 p.m. at Baruch College's ARC Arena.
