Women's Basketball: New Rochelle 84, Yeshiva 71

NEW YORK, NY – The College of New Rochelle overcame a slow start to cruise to an 84-71 victory over Yeshiva University in a critical HVIAC matchup.  With the win, the Blue Angels clinch a berth in the upcoming HVIAC Championship Tournament.

Facing a raucous home crowd and falling behind, 12-0, to begin a game that placed the winner in the tournament and left the loser on the outside looking in, things looked bleak for CNR, but the Blue Angels rallied with a 21-9 run of their own to knot the score at 21 apiece following an Alyssa Pechin layup with 11:18 remaining before the half.

The Macs regained the lead on the ensuing possession, but were unable to hold off CNR, as the Blue Angels took the lead for good on a Ja'Nasha King trifecta with 7:39 that made the score 28-27 in favor of the visitors.  Two Pechin makes from the charity stripe to close out the half gave CNR an 11 point, 49-38, lead going into the break.

Held to just six points in the first stanza, Jasmine Brandon exploded for 16 points in the second 20 minutes as the Blue Angels pushed the lead to as many as 20 points and did not allow the Macs to get closer than 10 points over the final 17 minutes.

Brandon's 22 points paced the Blue Angels, while Jah-Leah Ellis added 18 points, a game-high 19 rebounds, six assists, four steals and three blocks en route to her 16thdouble-double of the season.  Holly Cammarota chipped in with 14 points and Alyssa Pechin tallied 10 points and six assists.

With her total tonight, Pechin is just seven points from joining the 1,000 point club, as the junior has accumulated 993 points over her Blue Angel career.

NEW YORK, N.Y.— Playing in front of a packed crowd for Macs Madness and Senior Day, the Yeshiva women's basketball team played a spirited game, but fell short in the end as the Maccabees were defeated by the College of New Rochelle (CNR) 84-71 at Baruch College's ARC Arena on Tuesday evening.

The loss for the Maccabees leaves them at 6-11 overall and they finish the Hudson Valley Conference with a 2-4 record. College of New Rochelle is now 14-9 and 3-2 in the Hudson Valley.

Yeshiva was led by Julia Owen, playing her first game in two months, with 22 points, five rebounds and four assists. Stephanie Greenberg chipped in with 19 points, six rebounds and four steals, while Rebecca Yoshor had 10 points and eight rebounds.

CNR was led by Ja-Leah Ellis with a great all-around game of 18 points, 19 rebounds, six assists, four steals and three blocked shots. Jasmine Brandon scored a team-high 22 points to go along with nine rebounds for the visiting Blue Angels.

The Maccabees came ready to play, jumping out to a 12-0 lead to start the contest. But early foul trouble caused Yeshiva to have to adjust its lineups earlier than anticipated and CNR capitalized on the opportunity. The Maccabees were holding a 27-21 lead, before CNR went on a 16-0 run to gain a 37-27 lead with 6:07 to play. From there CNR led the rest of the way.

The Blue Angles held a 56-32 advantage on points in the paint, and 31-21 on points off turnovers.

Yeshiva returns to action on Thursday for a game against Purchase College at 8 p.m. The game will be played on the College of New Rochelle's campus.
