Pratt Sweeps New Rochelle To Claim Fifth Women's Tennis Title

FLUSHING, N.Y. — Top-seeded Pratt Institute completed an unblemished league season winning the 2016 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis championship with a 9-0 victory over No. 2 The College of New Rochelle on Saturday afternoon at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

For Pratt, it was their fifth league title in the last six years, finishing as runner-up in last year's tournament. The Cannoneers swept all five contests against conference opponents and closed out the season with six straight 9-0 victories. For New Rochelle, it was their first runner-up finish in 10 years since the start of the league archives.

The Cannoneers assembled a dominating performance winning all nine flights by a margin of seven games or greater, led by 2016 HVIAC Player of the Year and All-HVIAC honoree Amanda Twu (Spring Lake, Mich.) atop the lineup at No. 1 singles. Fellow All-HVIAC team members Melanie Kania (Endicott, N.Y.) and Haddie Webster (Richmond, Vt.) followed at No. 2 singles and No. 4 singles, respectively, with Webster, the 2016 Rookie of the Year, securing the title-clinching point.

Pratt earned a spot in their second straight title game sweeping No. 4 Berkeley College, 9-0, in a rematch of last year's title game, while New Rochelle edged No. 3 Vaughn College, 5-4, in the other semifinal.
