BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) men's basketball team produced a season-high offensive output and matched a school record with 17 three-pointers, controlling King's 109-62 at the Hill Center on Saturday to improve to 15-7 and remain undefeated (4-0) in HVIAC-play.
All 13 Bears got on the scoreboard. Vernon Maddox (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) led the way with 12 on a pair of triples. The senior also dished out a pair of assists and swiped three steals.
Junior Greg Beehler (Breezy Point, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) continued his onslaught from long range, connecting three times en route to 11 points.
Junior Jamir Archer (Staten Island, N.Y./CSI) corralled a career-high 12 boards, adding six points on 3-of-5 shooting.
Freshman Olatunde Bashorun (Staten Island, N.Y./Port Richmond) and junior Carlos Mayorga (East Elmhurst, N.Y./St. John's Prep) chipped in 11 apiece off the bench.
The Bears overwhelmed King's out of the gate with their largest unanswered run of the season, building a 25-0 advantage less than eight minutes after tipoff.
The Lions finally got on the board at the 11:53 mark following senior Josiah Chapman's triple. But the Bears' lead would balloon to 30 (45-15) with 5:45 remaining in the first after Bashorun connected from deep to continue the three-point barrage.
Maddox closed the first with a layup to put St. Joseph's up 56-19, their largest halftime lead of the season.
Ten seconds after the break, Beehler netted a triple to give the Bears a 40-point (59-19) advantage. At the 15:28 mark, Michael Megafu's (Jamaica, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) layup expanded the lead to 44 (69-25), the Bears' largest of the year.
With the game well in hand, the sides traded baskets the rest of the period. St. Joseph's would finish the night with a season-high 109 points, reaching the century-mark for just the second time this year.
The Lions stayed competitive in the second-half, but the Bears had built an insurmountable lead by intermission, raining down 11 three-pointers in the first. St. Joseph's finished 17-of-41 (41.5%) from downtown with eight different Bears connecting at least once.
St. Joseph's thrived on both ends of the court as their stifling defense held King's to 36.0 percent (27-75) from the field, including just 22.2 percent (8-36) in a dominant first-half display.
