The Berkeley College men's tennis team picked up a victory on Wednesday evening, defeating the Warriors of Vaughn College by a score of 5-4 in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. The match was played at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.
With the victory, the Knights improved to 4-2 on the 2017 campaign, including a mark of 3-1 in regional competition. The triumph for Berkeley College was also means the Knights clinched their first winning season since the program's inception back in 2015. Vaughn College dipped to 1-3 with the loss (1-3 HVIAC).
Things looked bleak for the Knights in the early stages of this one, as Vaughn College captured two of the three doubles flights. At No. 1 doubles, the Knights' combination of Johnathan Wilson and Alexander Maurmann defeated the Warriors' pairing of Tobi Oladeji and Ousmane Thioune by a score of 8-4. Vaughn picked up a victory at the No. 2 flight, as Michael Panico and Raphael Cordina outlasted the Knights' Sebastien Rousseau and Nicholas Echavarria, 8-7 (7-3). The Warriors won the No. 3 flight by default.
When play switched over to singles, Berkeley College rallied back to take four of the six singles flights, and the match. At the No. 1 flight, it was Wilson defeating Oladeji, 10-6. Rousseau nailed-down a win over Cordina at No. 3 singles, 10-5, and it was Echavarria picking up a convincing win over Thioune, 10-2. Berkeley's final victory of the day came at No. 5, as Maurmann turned back O'Brian Williams, 10-2. The Warriors captured wins at No. 2 singles (Panico over Rajah Ulrich Mopoundza, 10-5), and at No. 6 (by default).
The Knights will now look to the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference semifinals, where they will take on Pratt Institute. The date and time of the match is currently to-be-announced. Vaughn College will also be heading to the tournament, as the Warriors will face Culinary Institute of America in the opening round.

On Wednesday, April 19, the Warriors men's tennis team played their last regular season match against Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HIVAC) opponent Berkeley College (NY). Both teams played extremely hard but in the end the Warriors would come up short against the Berkeley College Knights. The Warriors were defeated by the Knights by a final score of 5-4.
The Warriors won two out of their three doubles matches against Berkeley College. Unfotunately for the Warriors they were only able to win two out of their six singles matches and came to up a point short of victory.
The loss drops the Warriors to a number four seed in the HVIAC playoffs. They will face the number one seed in the HVIAC playoffs, Culinary Institute of America (CIA) Steels.
