Women's Tennis: Pratt 6, Sarah Lawrence 3

QUEENS, NY -- Pratt Institute remained undefeated at 7-0 and 3-0 in league play, besting Sarah Lawrence College in a battle of Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Confernece unbeatens Saturday afternoon at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center.

The Cannoneers were led, as usual, by HVIAC co-Players of the Week Agata Jakubowska (Dallas, TX/Plano East) and Sarah Conant (Lowell, MA/Lowell), as the tandem improved to 7-0 in No. 1 doubles with an 8-5 win over Nora Landes and Kayla Pincus. Jakubowsa again cleaned up top singles with a 10-2 win over Landes, moving to 7-0 on the year, all in No. 1 play.

In her first taste of No. 2 singles action, senior Rachel Caires (Brooklyn, NY/St. John Baptist) rose to the occasion in improving to 5-0 on the season with a 10-3 defeat of Pincus. Also improving to 5-0 was the No. 2 doubles team of Whitney Mills (Rocky River, OH/Rocky River) andGabriella Guerra (Littleton, CO/Heritage), which scored an 8-2 win over Sarah Fiordaliso and Lane Garber. Individually, Mills and Guerra scored victories in No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively.

For Sarah Lawrence (4-6, 1-1 HVIAC), freshman Autumn Atkinson (Manaswuan, NJ/George School) scored a 10-4 third singles win and teamed with Juliet Slade (St. Paul, MN/Central) for an 8-3 No. 3 doubles victory. 

In one of the team's toughest tests to date, first-place Pratt returns to the courts on Wednesday, playing host to 3-1 Purchase State in non-conference play. Sarah Lawrence welcomes New Rochelle in HVIAC play Wednesday.

FLUSHING, N.Y.—In a battle of unbeaten HVIAC teams, Sarah Lawrence College women's tennis was toppled by Pratt Institute, 6-3, in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center on Saturday.

In doubles play, rookies Autumn Atkinson (Manasquan, N.J./George School) and Juliet Slade (St. Paul, Minn./Central) came away victorious in their No. 3 match, 8-3, winning their ninth-straight match as a partnership. The Cannoneers won the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches, carrying a 2-1 lead into singles play.

At No. 1 singles, Pratt's Agata Jakubowska preserved her undefeated record, improving to 7-0 on the season. Pratt also won the No. 2 match with a win by Rachel Caires, who is now 5-0.

SLC's Atkinson won her third straight match, picking up the No. 3 singles point, 10-4. The two-time HVIAC Player of the Week has won all seven of her matches playing at No. 3 or lower in the lineup.

Pratt clinched the match with wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. In No. 6 singles, Gryphon Cecilia Ross (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial)picked up the final point for the Green and White, winning her third straight match, 10-2.

Sarah Lawrence is set to take on HVIAC foe College of New Rochelle on Tuesday. The match is slated for 5 p.m. at SLC's Andrews Tennis Courts.
