Women's Tennis: Sarah Lawrence 8, St. Joseph's 1

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—In the team's final league match of the season, Sarah Lawrence College women's tennis defeated ST. Joseph's College Brooklyn, 8-1, in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Andrews Tennis Courts on Monday.

With the win, the Gryphons clinch a runner-up finish in the HVIAC regular-season standings, having lost only to currently-undefeated Pratt Institute.

Sarah Lawrence (6-7, 3-1 HVIAC) jumped out to an early lead, winning two of three matches. Rookies Autumn Atkinson(Manasquan, N.J./George School) and Juliet Slade (St. Paul, Minn./Central) improved to 12-0 on the season with an 8-1 win in the No. 3 match. At No. 1 doubles, Nora Landes (Los Angeles, Calif./Cleveland Humanities Magnet) and Kayla Pincus(Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights) won their first five games en route to an 8-2 win.

St. Joseph's (0-7, 0-2 HVIAC) earned its only point of the match in the No. 2 doubles match, as Kelly McNamee and Samantha Rossi knocked off their Gryphon opponents.

With SLC in front, 2-1, the Green and White took full control of the singles matches. Landes made quick work of the No. 1 match, winning 10-0. At No. 2 singles, Pincus yielded only one game in her 10-1 victory.

Rookie Sarah Pyatt (Taos, N.M./Taos) picked up her first individual shutout win, taking the No. 3 match by a 10-0 margin. Atkinson remained perfect in league play by taking the No. 3 match, 10-2.

At No. 6 singles, Moni Spancheska (Skopje, Macedonia/NOVA International) won the first three games and scored two more break points as she took her match, 10-4. In the last match on the courts, senior Cecilia Ross (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial)dug out of a 6-3 deficit and won seven straight games in her 10-6 win to seal the 8-1 team victory.

Sarah Lawrence hosts Purchase College on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Andrews Courts. The Gryphons then play their regular-season finale against Yeshiva University on Wednesday, Oct. 23, before proceeding to the 2013 HVIAC Championships on Saturday, Oct. 26, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Senior Kelly McNamee (Glendale, N.Y./Mary Louis) and freshmanSamantha Rossi (Bayside, N.Y./Mary Louis) notched the lone point for the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's tennis team during an 8-1 defeat to Sarah Lawrence College in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) matchup on Monday night.

The Lady Bears (0-7, 0-2 HVIAC) drop their seventh straight to begin the season, while the Gryphons (6-7, 3-1 HVIAC) have won two of their last three matches and remain in second place in the HVIAC.

Both McNamee and Rossi paired up to win their first doubles match of the year, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles with the freshman earning her first collegiate win.

Sophomore Deirdre Lavelle (Brooklyn, N.Y./Fontbonne Hall) had the best performance for St. Joseph's in the singles competition falling 10-6 at No. 5 singles. FreshmanMadeline Moravek (Whitestone, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) had a respectable outing for the Lady Bears dropping a 10-4 matchup at No. 6 singles.

St. Joseph's returns to the court on Wednesday, October 16th as they host CCNY at the USTA National Tennis Center. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
