BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's soccer team fell 6-1 to The King's College (N.Y.) in a matchup of Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) schools on Saturday afternoon at Brooklyn Technical High School Field.
St. Joseph's (1-8, 1-3 HVIAC) has now lost three conference games in a row and four overall while King's (N.Y.) (5-3, 2-1 HVIAC) moves over .500 in league play and has won four of their last five games.
The opening minutes of the first half saw the action go in favor of the Lions as they forced Lady Bears senior goalkeeper Nicole Farinella (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport HS) to make four saves in the first 16 minutes of action. However, St. Joseph's got on the board first when senior Cynthia Gambino (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) took a ball that was misplayed by a King's (N.Y.) defender and fired it past Lions goalkeeper Victoria McAlister for her fourth of the year to take a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.
The Lions responded after the goal by applying pressure in the Lady Bears end forcing Farinella to make two additional saves before King's (N.Y.) broke through with a goal of their own in the 33rd minute when Caitlin Essex scored directly off a corner finding the top right corner of the goal to tie the game up at 1-1.
Just a little over a minute later the Lions tacked on another goal this time off the foot of Caroline Craddock that proved to be the game-winner.
St. Joseph's headed into the break only down 2-1 despite being outshot 14-2 with Farinella helping out with her eight saves.
King's (N.Y.) did not wait long in the second half to find the back of the net scoring less than two minutes into the period when Craddock struck again off a throughball from Genesis Castrellon to take a 3-1 lead and leaving the Lady Bears in disbelief.
Castrellon added the next two goals scoring in the 54th and 70th minute to give the Lions a commanding 5-1 advantage with 20 minutes remaining.
King's (N.Y.) concluded their scoring in the 76th minute when Essex scored again off a throughball from Castrellon.
The Lions finished the game outshooting the Lady Bears 27-4 while holding a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Castrellon finished the match with a game-high 10 shots on goal while McAlister made two saves in net to pick up the win.
St. Joseph's had four shots on the day with sophomore Pamela Chernyakhovsky (Brooklyn, N.Y./Leon M. Goldstein) accounting for two and sophomore Shannon Fahy (Breezy Point, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) and Gambino recording the others. Farinella made 14 saves in taking the loss.
The Lady Bears next play on Tuesday, October 8th taking on HVIAC foe Yeshiva at Calvert Vaux Field. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.

After their previous game against SUNY-Canton (a 0-5 loss) where the Lady Lions simply could not get in their groove, this week's conference game against St. Joe's=Brooklyn would prove to be an important test. How would the young Lions team respond to their previous game's shortcomings? Unfortunately, they did not get off to a good start and opened the game in a very sluggish and uninspired fashion. They found themselves down 0-1 after a miscommunication between keeper, Victoria McAlister, and midfielder, Voleak Sroeung. That seemed to be the wake-up call they needed, however, as they started to come alive after that unintended goal. The Lady Lions picked up their tempo and intensity level and ten minutes later sophomore, Caitlin Essex, put her corner kick into the top right corner of the goal to tie the game 1-1. Just 90 seconds passed and junior, Caroline Craddock, dribbled 30 yards and put one in the back of the net for a 2-1 halfime lead. After a halftime chat with coaches about the importance of staying focused and playing with urgency, the team roared out in the second half. Craddock struck again just two minutes into the half for a 3-1 lead and seven minutes later freshman, Genesis Castrellon, made it 4-1. Essex and Castrellon would each add an insurance goal for a 6-1 victory. McAlister made two saves in goal and the TKC defense allowed only 4 shots, two in each half. They now stand 2-1 in the HVIAC Conference and 5-3 overall with two big conference games coming up this week against Yeshiva and Berkeley.
