Men's Soccer: Berkeley 5, Culinary 0

The Berkeley College New York men's soccer team stayed perfect in Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition, defeating the Steels of Culinary Institute of America by a score of 5-0 Saturday afternoon in a game played in Hyde Park, NY. With the victory, the Knights are now 8-2 on the season, including an unblemished 4-0 record in league play, while Culinary Institute of America slipped to 1-4-1 overall, and a mark of 1-2 in HVIAC action.

In a game dominated by Berkeley College offensively, the Knights had plenty of opportunities to get on the board in the first half. Berkeley registered 12 shots in the opening session, including five on goal that were stopped by Steels goaltender Nicholas Antunes. After 45 minutes of action, the game was scoreless.

Once play moved to the second period, the Knights broke through in a big way, scoring five goals in a 27-minute span to run away from Culinary Institute of America. Berkeley's barrage of goals began when Essofi Amine buried a ball into the net (assisted by Solomon Ahanaonu) to give his team a 1-0 lead at the 47:56 mark. Goals by Victor Marotta (at 49:20, unassisted and 53:06, from Ahanaonu) pushed the Knights ahead by the score of 3-0. Later – Ahanaonu – who was already having a terrific afternoon with a pair of assists – scored two goals 2:18 apart (at 72:26 and 74:44).Aboubacar Sogoba picked up an assist on Ahanaonu's first goal, with Yannick Mabuye getting credited with a helper on the other.

Mathias Valle picked up the victory in net for Berkeley, logging 62:16 and stopping two shots while lowering his G.A.A. to 1.37 on the year. Sebastian Rousseau played 27:44, making four saves.

The Knights held a 31-8 edge in the shots category, while receiving 11 corner kick opportunities compared to three for the Steels. Berkeley was whistled to 17 fouls compared to 12 for Culinary Institute of America.

Berkeley College will return to action on Wednesday evening, as the Knights take on Vaughn College in another Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. The match will take place at Queens College and begins at 6:00pm.
