ACPHS' Brandon Votra (Saint Regis Falls, NY) went a perfect 9-9 from the floor which he turned into 19 points to lead the Panthers to a 94-70 win over HVIAC foe Davis College. The win moves ACPHS to 2-1 in the league and 3-10 overall, while Davis falls to 1-2 and 2-15 respectively.
The first half saw 25 total fouls call, with 16 against Davis which put Albany in the bonus with 11:49 left in the half. Neither team held a lead of more than four until a jumper by junior Alex Johnson (Malone, NY) gave the Panthers a 14-8 lead with 10:53 to go. Over the course of the next five minutes, missed free throws from Albany let the Falcons back in it. Albany saw their lead cut down to one at the 4:54 mark, on their way to a 9-17 mark from the charity stripe in the 1st. The Panthers picked it up to close the half, ending on a 13-6 run to take a 35-27 advantage into the break. In the period, Johnson and freshman Nathan Beltran led all scorers with nine, with Beltran hitting two threes. Votra was right behind with eight points and six rebounds.
Both teams came out hot in the 2nd, with ACPHS scoring the first five but Davis answering with a 7-2 run of their own. The turning point in the game came when Albany ripped off a 14-0 run starting at the 15 minute mark to extend their lead to 20. The game got a bit chippy in the end, with a flagrant foul and a few scuffles, but nothing the Panthers couldn't handle. They never let the Falcons get closer than 18 the rest of the way. Votra scored 11 of his 19 in just 10 2nd half minutes, while freshman Kyle Matousek scored 14 in the half on the way to a team-high 23. Johnson and Beltran finished with 19 and 13 respectively. The Panthers won this one on the strength of their defense and rebounding, holding Davis to 11-42 from three and out-rebounding them 57-33.
Next up, Albany plays host to HVIAC opponent Culinary next Monday, January 23rd at 8pm. Davis travels to New Rochelle on Wednesday, January 25th.
