Five Towns College and Berkeley College Advance. SUNY ESF and WOLBI Set for Women's Final

The Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference kicked-off the Men's and Women's Soccer Championship Weekend at tthe Word of Life Bible Institute in Pottersville, NY.

 

The action began at Noon on Saturday where the #1 Seeded, Five Towns College(2-0-1, 6-2-1) faced #4 Seed, SUNY ESF(0-2-1, 2-7-4). Earlier in the season, the Sound tied the Mighty Oaks 1-1.

Within the opening minutes, the Sound struck first when Angel Chavez found the back of the Mighty Oaks goal giving Five Towns College an early 1-0 lead.

As the match unfolded, Andre Hickling, would connect with the foot of Angel Chavez, at the 33:00 minute mark, sending the Sound into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

 

In the second half, Five Towns College would secure the victory when David Canales, passed the ball to Anthony Campos, who scored the third goal for the Sound.

 

Gabe Hunchro, put forth a valiant effort in goal for the Mighty Oaks, saving 4-out of- 7 shots on goal. Steven Paguada and Eduardo Martinez would combine for three saves for Five Towns College.

 

The second match of the day featured, #2 Seed, Berkeley College(2-1, 13-3) against #3 Seed, The Word of Life Bible Institute(1-2, 7-5-1). During the regular season, the Knights bested the Huskies, 6-2.

 

The Knights scored first with an unassisted goal by, Marco DaSilva. The Huskies would answer with a goal of their own a few minutes later when Calem Mason would connect with Cyleek Zaimoff.

Neither team would capitalize on the momentum until the 36:00 minute mark when Ian Pallardel found the back of the Huskies net giving Berkeley College a 2-1 lead at the half.

 

The second half of the match was an all Berkeley College affair as the Knights unleashed a barrage of goals in a ten minute period of time. Lucas Zuleta lead the charge striking first and putting the Knights ahead 3-1. Marco DaSilva would score a second time in the match off of a pass from Esteban Pedrueza. Moments later, Eddie Becirovic would give the Knights a comfortable 5-1 lead with an unassisted goal. Esteban Pedrueza would record his second assist of the match finding Fabrizio Sousa for the final Berkeley College goal.

 

The Huskies refused to go away quietly as the amassed a scoring run of their own. Colden Deitch would pass the ball off to Joseph Mathews, giving the Word of Life Bible Institute their second goal of the game. Joseph Mathews would strike again with an unassisted goal, cutting the Berkeley College lead to three goals.

 

Berkeley College Goalies, Victor Batista and Jose Hurtado combined for 5 saves. A notable effort from Huskies Goalie, Seth Randall, who saved 5 of the 11 shots on goal.

 

The Championship game is scheduled for 4:00 pm on Sunday 11/5/2023. This will be the second season in a row with a Five Towns College vs. Berkeley College final.

The Women's Soccer Championship will take place on Sunday 11/5/2023 with a 1:00 pm kick-off.

This year the title game will pit #1 Seed, SUNY ESF(2-0, 6-3-1) against #2 Seed, The Word of Life Bible Institute(0-1-1, 3-6-2). The Mighty Oaks defeated the Huskies 7-0 in conference play.
