For the first time as conference members, Villa Maria College earns the HVIAC Men's Basketball Tournament and Regular Season crown.
The Vikings entered into today's game as #2 seed and faced perennial powerhouse #1 seed, Berkeley College. The Vikings advanced to the finals with a win over Five Towns College in the semi-finals.
This is the second year in a row that both teams faced-off to claim the conference title. As Berkeley College came into the game with the high hopes of a 15th conference championship, the Vikings had other plans.
In the opening minutes of the first half, the Knights jumped out to a 6 point lead and appeared to be on their way to another conference title. The Vikings continued to chip away eventually taking a slight lead midway through the half. Paced by Juston Johnson, and several series of scoring runs, the Vikings would take a 46-34 lead into halftime.
The second half of play saw the Knights slowly clawing back into the game, however the Vikings would continue to hold a double digit advantage. Berkeley College would win the half 42-39, which was not enough to defeat Villa Maria College. When the final buzzer sounded, the Vikings would be victorious with a 85-76 win.
Juston Johnson, Damario James, Taron Benton, and Trevin Boling would combine for 57 of the 85 points; while Master Radford controlled the glass with a team high of 10 rebounds.
Julio Wallace, Justyce Coleman, Kenneth Hines, and Karanja Bright all scored in double digits for the Knights.
Berkeley College finishes the year 14-9, and Villa Maria College 13-14.
